Kenilworth Carnival, 2019

Carnival Weekend Saturday 29th June – Sunday 30th

But how do you enter? I hear you cry…

Here’s how:

Step 1:

Get a group of silly people together (and 1 bossy one)

Step 2:

Meet up, have some tea and biscuits or a Rum and BBQ, come up with some ideas (for the carnival, not food!), and then…

Option 1: argue until the Captain tells you what you’re doing.

Option 2: vote on ideas and democratically agree on that year’s theme

Option 3: Pitch and idea and see if the group gets excited!

Step 3:

Download a form from http://www.kenilworthcarnival.org.uk

Fill it in, and conduct a risk assessment

Step 4:

Have a few meetings / socials / rehearsals (depending on your theme)

Have lots of FUN

Step 5:

Make some props and costumes

Have lots of FUN

Step 6:

Walkers – get ready and practice walking in your costumes and carrying your props

Floats – decide who is going to ‘install’ your float, safety barriers etc and where the money is going to be collected

Have lots of FUN

Step 7:

Try and get the lorry delivered the night before or really really really early on the day

Have lots of FUN

Have a chippy tea on the lorry (if it’s the night before)

Step 8:

THE DAY

Get up ridiculously early

Get a member of your group to make bacon sandwiches!

The whole time, feeling as though we have all the time in the world… oooh I want ketchup on mine!!

Then - all hands to the decks while the lorry comes together… have lots and lots of FUN!

Get into costumes, have make-up applied and then…

…everybody run around screaming at each other in a blind panic because you don’t think you’ll get to the Brays in time – AAAARRRRGH! It’s far too early!

Why can’t it be 2pm like it used to be!!!!!

And then, calmly get to the Brays performing as you sail past the judges in all your most excellent and muchly glory….

FOR ITS CARNIVAL DAY, CARNIVAL DAY C-C-C-C-C-C-C-C- CARNIVAL DAY!!

Kenilworth Carnival Day…let’s keep this going!

Come on, it’s not that difficult, its lots of fun and it’s a great way to raise money!

Chinewrde Security Services, 2018

Kenilworth Carnival, 2018

Kenilworth Carnival Day is always a very special day; entertaining and filled with wonder and awe.

The Chinewrde Security Services were proud and honoured to have been employed to protect a Very Important VIP. They were responsible for the safety of a celebrity with such calibre they were in a Jaguar throughout the entire procession. They got the call weeks before the day, and were tasked with the extremely important and secret job of ensuring that Celebrity C was safe at all times.

I caught up with the Chinewrde Security Services briefly to find out more, this is what they told me:

What we knew:

Celebrity C has always driven through the streets of Kenilworth around midday on the last Saturday of June, it had always been the perfect day for her to drive through her child hood town that day every year as it’s usually quiet. Unfortunately, someone has moved the annual Carnival event forward by a week and it was looking to clash with Celebrity C’s annual trip.

Unperturbed, celebrity C decided to enlist the best security team she could pay for.

She had to make sure that she was covered on all angles, I mean what if somebody recognised her – the whole procession would grind to a halt as thousands of people would be bound to surround the car just to see her, just to be breathing the same air as her and to try and get a selfie with her.

We knew it was a highly important task, and we knew the risks – Kenilworth Carnival Day is always so busy, people are lined along the streets as though they are waiting for something, so we knew that there were potential risks everywhere!

Celebrity C, is such a mysterious celebrity that we were not even given her name only a code name, but we knew that meant that she was a huge Talent!

Unfortunately, Celebrity C has run off with the Jaguar – her driver just kept going after the procession, so we are without a car now – we are still available for other types of security work of course, and as we have always said No job too big, no celebrity too small! If anyone does need our services, we meet every third Wednesday at the big Oak in Abbey Fields.

What a lovely day it was, not a rain drop during the procession… happy faces everywhere. The floats were great – some real work had gone into the props, costumes and themes… so, I guess all we can say is:

…better start thinking about next year, after all, Kenilworth is pretty damn good at this carnival lark!
